Dear memory,

Lately, you seem to be having some problems keeping your priorities straight. To clarify:

The following things really don't need to be on super-high-available-at-all-times access:

• The "share and enjoy" song from The Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy radio show
  
• The events of April 8th and April 9th 2000
  
• The rest of your sophomore year of college
  
• Every embarrassing thing you have ever done
  
• "Dies Irae" from Mozart's Requiem and/or any other choral piece which you are not performing again any time soon
  
• Phone numbers that you haven't called in years
  

Please refile them in a lower-priority slot and replace with things such as:

• The location of your car at any given time
  
• Your social security number
  
• Your pin numbers and passwords
  
• Things you need to get done this week
  
• Your bank balance
  
• Phone numbers of people you call all the time
  

This should lead to a more efficient and well-run life.

That sounds reasonable to me.

I'd like to stop remembering phone numbers of people who lived in the Bay Area 10 years ago and replace it with my credit card number.

Here's one for you, has anyone suggested a setting that forces the display of your friends page so that all posts are auto trimmed after a set number of lines? I'm tired of 8 page posts...

I seem to remember that being suggested before, but I know no specific feature of that kind has been implemented, and I couldn't find it after a cursory search of both the bug database and the suggestions community. Thus, I don't think anyone's working on it. I know that some custom styles have enclosed entries in divs with pre-defined lengths to them and had each entry scroll within its own div.
I think that's as close as it gets right now. There may or may not be a way to do it with S2, the new style system that's in beta right now. I really haven't poked at that yet since learning some site-specific coding language that's still fluid due to its beta-ness just isn't something I can muster much enthusiasm for. As a free user, you really can't do much with styles under either system, since that's a paid account perk. If you want to see how they work, though, you can get an account on the test server and play with styles there (since it's for testing changes before they go live on the real site, and they want the paid member stuff tested as throughly as possible, all accounts are "paid" there).

What can I do with overrides? And is there a way to change the dialogs as a free user?

I don't think you can do anything about the length of posts with overrides, although I could be wrong. Here are the FAQs about customization and overrides. You might also look through howto. I pretty much left my journal alone until I got a permanent account (and thus, use of the style system) so I'm really not that sure what can and can't be done.

I'm not sure quite what you mean by "change the dialogs". Could you give me an example?
