Note to self:
Karl and his saucy pirate band were the funniest damn thing ever and you're not allowed to forget about them again. Furthermore, you will write that whole thing down coherently at some point.

Who is this Karl, and why does _he_ get a saucy pirate band?

Oh, this was in a GURPS game I GM'd a few years ago. The PCs were students bumming around modern-day Europe, and one or both of them had taken the disadvantage "weirdness magnet". So while they were having dinner, this guy named Karl comes up to them, changing languages with every word, and asks them to join his Saucy Pirate Band. He also develops a crush on Kiki (the character with weirdness magnet, if I remember right). Anyway, they start finding Karl every place they go. And he always begs them to join his saucy pirate band. He follows them across Europe. I can't remember why, but they try to kill him by throwing him out a window at some point, and then flee, trying to escape the law. So then I have a party of PCs running all over Europe, trying to evade the law (which, as it happens, isn't really after them, since Karl was unhurt - GM fiat). They find Karl *again*, crying in the bathroom of the hostel they're staying in because they won't join his saucy pirate band. They fold him a pirate hat out of newspaper, and that delights him. I can't remember most of the rest of what happened for a while (except that there was also a subplot involving hot tubs) but in the end, to wrap up the story, we agreed that the characters would all go join the saucy pirate band. I swear, after midnight, this was the funniest thing _ever_.

I remembered it because I was reading old ICQ logs and in one of them I was trying to get Ian to ask Sean (Kiki's player, and yes, *that* Sean, although this game was almost a year before I dated him) to join his Saucy Pirate Band, just to see what Sean would do. Ian, having no idea what this was about, refused. Anyway.

That was a fun game to GM. Two players and both of them good friends who I could be comfortable acting out NPCs around.

So Karl had to *work* for his Saucy Pirate Band. He earned it.

Incidentally, the whole "Saucy Pirates" thing came up because I'd been listening to an old Heather Alexander tape too much, and it had the song "High Barbary" on it, which featured the wonderful line 'for quarters, for quarters the saucy pirates cried' which was stuck in my head at the time.
