It's very frustrating to know you own a specific book (in this case, Chinese Handcuffs by Chris Crutcher) and have no idea where you put it. I need a Librarian Fairy to come and organize all of my books...
Non fiction: dewey decimal, with the exception that all CS books are to be kept downstairs by my study area instead.
fiction: alphabetical by author, by either series title or fisrt book in the series within author (I used to do it by publication date of the first book of the series, but that was kind of a pain to keep track of). Sreis is then shelved in reading order after teh first book. If there is a debate about reading order (such as the Narnia books), then chronologically by publication date. Single-author short story collections shelved with that author, multiple author ones shelved in a seperate short story area by title, unless they could be considered to be about a series shelved elsewhere (such as Sword of Ice), in which case they are shelved with that series, either at the end of it or (if clear) where it would go chronologically. Multiple-author novels by whoever's name comes first, unless it's a multiple book series, in which case by wherever the first book would go. Multiple author series go by the author of the original book. Multiple-author series that were concieved from the beginning to be multiple-author (rather than an established series which books are then written in by other people too, like McCaffrey's Ship books) are shelved by series title (for example, all Babylon 5 novels are under Babylon 5 rather than the author's name). Manga get their own section, by author's name, as do comic books, also by author's name. Play scripts are also in their own section, by author. Childrens picture books also get their own section, by author, as do foreign language materials, by language and then author.
The terrible thing is, the idea of coming over and organizing your books actually appeals to me. I will be your happy library fairy... as soon as I get some free time which is pretty much never. That said, I am planning to come on Saturday! Wooo!
Yay! I get to see you again! What do you in eat (instead of|on) ice cream these days? I plan on doing sundae-making at the party. Also, I'm taking snack food tips in general.

Ok, so I'm picky.
