Actually, since I'm a senior, I get to have a single. (Thankfully.) At my college (Lewis and Clark) the average dorm room is about the same size as the room I had when I was a kid, or a little smaller. Pretty much enough room for two beds, two desks and two desk chairs. If you want to add, say, another chair or two, you pretty much have to "loft" the bed so it's up where a top bunk would be. The building I live in has walk-in closets almost big enough to lay down in diagonally without bending your knees. The singles are about half of the size of the normal rooms, so they pretty much just have room for a bed and a desk. I should have gotten one of the 2 good singles in my building this year, though. (There are 6 singles in my building. Yes, I know that's an absurdly small number.) The good singles were created when they remodeled the bathroom when the dorm went co-ed. Since they had to make the bathroom bigger (to turn it into a boy's bathroom as well as a girl's bathroom) they had to make one of the rooms smaller. These singles aren't quite as small as the ones that were meant to be singles all along. Last year, I was in a room that was literally too small to put a double bed in. Well, maybe if I hadn't worried about having a little path past it it would have worked, but it would have taken up all the space in my room, leaving me pretty much with bed and doorway if it had fit at all. And I'm not sure it would have fit in there period. My closet was smaller than it would have been in a double, too, which made little sense since I still needed space for clothes and storage. And I live in the dorm with big rooms...some schools have better dorms that we do, but all of ours suck. We also don't have any off-campus apartments within walking distance though, so I'm back in the dorms anyway. (I wanted to rent a house with friends, but was unable to find one within walking distance. Also, I'm not sure I could live with my friends without killing them.)
