the openoffice equivalent of powerpoint generally does very badly with windows-formatted powerpoint files. my school computer is dual-boot, but one day i got lazy and decided to work on my ppt talk in linux since i was already logged in. yeah, didn't work so well :-) so, if powerpoint is something you need a lot, translating windows ppt to mac ppt (which also had issues, only much smaller ones, when i did it last) is easier than windows to openoffice.
