No internet for me

As some of you know, [livejournal.com profile] clipdude is moving out of The Mold Pit today. As probably fewer of you know, I don't have my own computer right now. So anyway, his computer goes away today. If I ever hear from the goddamn grad program, I can buy a computer, since then I'll know my budget for the next year. (They still haven't gotten back to me, which kind of tells me that they don't really want me no matter which way they decide. I'll probably call them Monday.)

If I don't hear from them, I'll probably snap and buy a nice, shiny Mac laptop sometime in the next two weeks. I'm waffling between that and a cheap Linux desktop. It comes down to price and how much I want to tinker with crap. I've never had a computer I couldn't reasonably expect to take apart and mess with before, so I'm not sure if I'd like a laptop. On the other hand, they are easier to, you know, use on your lap and stuff. And move, which I'll probably be doing a lot of. I didn't really do that much tinkering with Basil (my old Windows 98 box) anyway, so I may not really miss it much like I would have in the early nineties. I think I'm beginning to use computers more as a tool that allows me to do my other hobbies rather than as a hobby itself, so it may not really matter. I like the idea of having the freedom though. Bah.

In other news, my birthday is coming up. I'm thinking of having a party on May 14th, which is a Saturday, in Portland, which is a city in Oregon. Most likely at my dad's house, which is a yellow 3-bedroom in suburban hell. It will probably be a barbecue, which is an excuse to set food on fire. Could people come then? Would people come then? Should people come then? There are so many questions. Urgent ones should probably be asked by phone, due to the no-computer thing.

YAY PARTY!

Re: Mac lappy vs linux desktop: I just installed Linux on my old desktop now that I've got my new one, so if you're just interested in tinkering with Linux, you're free to fiddle with it.

Actually I'm probably even going to leave it in Oregon while I'm in Calif for the summer (that machine is *heavy*), so if you'd like to borrow/store it for the summer (once you know where you'll be), that's fine with me.

But if not, no worries-- I'm probably just gonna leave it at Mikey's otherwise.
