I think people have started to view email as an often-checked form of communication, like a phone message. This is because many people check (including me) make a habit of checking their email every day. (Of course, I remember when your voice-mail greeting warned people that you never checked it.) The problem with this assumption is that there is also many people that do not check their email daily. Anything especially urgent should be sent by phone, in addition to a possible email.
